Why We Don’t Use Essential Oils in Candles

When you light a candle, you’re doing more than illuminating a room. You’re bringing heat, fragrance, and an open flame into your home. That’s why we take every ingredient seriously.

At Straight Arrow Farms, we choose high-quality, candle-safe fragrance oils instead of pure essential oils for our candles. “Natural” may sound like the obvious choice, but natural doesn’t automatically mean safe or suitable for every application. Here’s why we made that decision.

Important for pet owners: essential oils can be toxic to dogs and cats

Some essential oils can be toxic to dogs and cats. The risk depends on the specific oil, its concentration, and how a pet is exposed. Breathing concentrated vapors, getting oils on their fur or skin, or licking residue can all be harmful. A scent that seems gentle to us may not be safe for our pets, which is one more reason we don’t use pure essential oils in our candles.

Always keep candles and fragrance products out of your pet’s reach, use them in a well-ventilated space, and contact your veterinarian if you’re concerned about possible exposure.

Essential oils are not made for every use

Essential oils can be wonderful when they’re used appropriately, such as in a diffuser or a properly formulated personal-care product. A candle is different. Its wick and melted wax create intense heat, and not every essential oil is tested or designed to perform safely in that environment.

Heat and flash points matter

Every fragrance material has specific handling and performance characteristics. Some essential oils are highly volatile and have low flash points, which can make them challenging to use in a candle. The wrong formulation can lead to an unstable flame, excessive soot, poor wax performance, or a candle that burns too aggressively.

Safe for the home means considering the whole household

Our homes include children, dogs, cats, and people with different sensitivities. Concentrated essential oils can be irritating or harmful when used incorrectly, and some can be toxic to dogs and cats. Choosing materials formulated and tested for candle use helps us make a more responsible product for the spaces you share with the people and pets you love.

A candle should smell good while it burns

Essential oils are often very volatile. In a candle, that can mean the scent doesn’t perform as expected once the wick is lit. You may get little hot throw, an uneven scent experience, or a burnt or fuel-like smell.

We want our candles to smell beautiful from the first light to the last burn. That means choosing fragrance materials that are designed to blend with wax, handle candle temperatures, and release scent consistently.
