The Science of Beautiful Soap: Why We Force Gel Phase in Every Cold Process Bar

Cold process soap is one of the oldest forms of skin care — and one of the most misunderstood. At Straight Arrow Farms, we make every bar by hand using the cold process method with fresh goat milk, and one of the most deliberate choices we make is forcing gel phase. Here's what that means, why it matters, and why you can feel the difference in every bar.

What Is Cold Process Soap?

Cold process (CP) soap is made by combining oils and butters with a lye solution — in our case, we use fresh goat milk in place of water to create a richer, creamier lather. The lye reacts with the fats through a process called saponification, converting them into soap and glycerin. Unlike melt-and-pour bases or commercially manufactured bars, cold process soap retains the naturally occurring glycerin, which is a humectant that draws moisture to the skin.

Goat milk is naturally rich in vitamins A, B2, and C, as well as lactic acid — a gentle alpha hydroxy acid that helps soften and brighten skin. It's one of the reasons our bars feel so different from anything you'll find on a drugstore shelf.

We also use farm-sourced tallow, nourishing plant oils, and botanicals in our recipes — the same ingredients you'll find in bars like our Tallow + Manuka Honey Soap and Peppermint Styx Tallow Soap.

What Is Gel Phase?

After soap batter is poured into the mold, saponification continues and generates heat. If enough heat builds up, the soap enters gel phase — a translucent, almost jelly-like stage where the soap molecules fully reorganize. It looks alarming the first time you see it, but it's actually a sign of a healthy, active cure.

Gel phase can happen naturally in insulated molds, or it can be forced by placing freshly poured soap in a warm oven (we use the oven-process method, or CPOP) or by insulating the mold tightly.

Why We Force Gel Phase

We don't leave gel phase to chance — we force it intentionally on every batch. Here's why:

  • Richer, more vibrant colour. Gel phase intensifies pigments and natural colorants. Our Black Raspberry Vanilla Soap and Blackberry Sage Soap get their deep, jewel-toned hues in part because of a full gel.
  • Smoother, harder bar. Fully gelled soap has a denser, more uniform texture that holds up better in the shower and lasts longer per bar.
  • More consistent cure. Forcing gel ensures the entire loaf reaches the same temperature, so you don't get a partially gelled bar with a lighter "halo" ring in the centre.
  • Faster saponification. The heat accelerates the chemical reaction, meaning the soap is more fully converted and gentler on skin sooner in the cure window.

What About Fragrance and Additives?

Some fragrance oils and additives (like honey or milk) can behave unpredictably in high heat — they can seize, discolour, or volcano out of the mold. That's part of the craft: knowing which recipes can handle a forced gel and which need a cooler cure. Our Coconut Beach Specialty Scrub Soap is another great example — the ground apricot shells and fragrance oils both require careful temperature management to keep the batter workable and the finished bar beautifully consistent.

How to Store Your Cold Process Soap

A handcrafted bar deserves a little care between uses. Here's how to get the most out of every bar:

  • Use a draining soap dish. The number one bar-killer is sitting in a puddle of water. Our Soap Saver Mat and Bamboo Soap Rack are both great options — they let air circulate underneath the bar and keep it dry between uses.
  • Keep it out of direct shower spray. Store your bar on a shelf or ledge away from the direct stream so it's not getting constantly wet and re-wet.
  • Store extras in a cool, dry place. Unused bars actually continue to cure and harden over time. A linen closet or drawer is ideal — they'll last for months and the bar will only get better.
  • Avoid airtight containers. Cold process soap needs airflow. Wrapping a bar in plastic traps moisture and can cause it to sweat or go soft.
  • One bar at a time. Rotate your stash and let each bar fully dry between uses for the longest lifespan.

A well-stored bar of cold process soap can last 6–8 weeks of regular use — sometimes longer. Treat it right and it'll take care of your skin in return.

The Result: Soap That's Worth the Wait

Cold process soap needs a minimum 4–6 week cure before it's ready to use. During that time, excess water evaporates and the bar hardens further. The wait is worth it — what you get is a long-lasting, skin-nourishing bar that's genuinely different from anything you'll find on a drugstore shelf.
