Why We Switched to Natural Skincare on Our Farm

Life on an 80-acre working farm like Straight Arrow Farms brings you closer to the cycles of nature than any office job ever could. Between managing livestock, tending to the gardens, and the daily physical demands of the homestead, you quickly realize that what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it.

For us, the switch to natural skincare wasn’t just a trend; it was a necessity born out of a desire for transparency, efficacy, and a return to traditional wisdom. Here is why we moved away from commercial aisles and toward the apothecary bench.

A Formulator’s Journey to Purity

With nearly a decade of experience in cosmetic manufacturing, the realization hit that many "high-end" skincare products are essentially expensive cocktails of water, synthetic fillers, and harsh preservatives.

We wanted something better—skincare that adhered to a "clean-label" standard. This meant eliminating the "Big Three" often found in commercial products:

  • Phthalates

  • Parabens

  • Formaldehyde-releasing agents

By manufacturing our own products in small batches, we have total control over every single drop that goes into a jar.

The Power of 100% Alberta Tallow

The cornerstone of our transition was the return to beef tallow. In a world obsessed with imported seed oils, tallow is a local, sustainable powerhouse. We use 100% Alberta grass-fed tallow, which is bio-identical to the oils our own skin produces.

However, we knew that many people were hesitant about the "earthy" scent of traditional tallow. To solve this, there is a five-stage rendering process. This ensures our tallow is completely scent-free and ultra-pure, providing a blank canvas for our nourishing formulations without any "beefy" aroma.

Why Goat Milk Belongs in the Soap Shack

While we use tallow in both our soaps and our creams, we found that goat milk is the ultimate "secret weapon" specifically for cleansing.

In our soapmaking process, goat milk replaces water. This adds a level of creaminess and luxury that water simply can't match. It’s rich in capric-caprylic triglycerides and lactic acid, which helps to gently brighten the skin while you wash. It’s why our Goat Milk Soap has become a staple for everyone from hardworking farmers to those with the most sensitive skin.

Handcrafted, Small-Batch Integrity

Switching to natural skincare also meant switching to a slower, more intentional way of manufacturing. On our farm, "small batch" isn't a marketing buzzword; it’s our reality.

  • Freshness: We produce our tallow creams and soaps in limited runs to ensure the ingredients are at their peak potency.

  • Sustainability: We source locally, supporting the same Alberta agricultural community that supports us.

  • Transparency: When you read our labels, you recognize the ingredients. There are no hidden "fragrance" loopholes.

The "Straight Arrow" Philosophy

We named our farm Straight Arrow Farms because it represents a direct, honest path. Our skincare follows that same trajectory—from the farm, to the apothecary, to your skin.

Making the switch wasn't just about avoiding "bad" ingredients; it was about embracing the "good" ones that have been right in front of us for generations. Whether it’s the protective barrier of a rich tallow cream or the gentle exfoliation of a goat milk bar, we believe that the best solutions are often the most traditional ones.
