The Art of the Custom Blend: Why Custom Formulations Require a Full Batch

Every now and then, a message pops up in my inbox that gets my formulating brain buzzing. A customer is looking for something incredibly specific—maybe a particular scent profile that takes them back to a childhood memory, a targeted blend for a specific skin preference, or a unique variation on one of our staple farm products.

The short answer? Yes, I can absolutely create a custom formulation for you!

In fact, bringing unique visions to life is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. However, crafting a product from scratch looks a little different than grabbing a standard bar off the shelf. To make these special projects possible, I require that clients commit to purchasing the full manufacturing batch.

Because I get asked about this often, I wanted to pull back the curtain and share a bit about why this policy is in place and what actually goes into creating a custom product.

1. Honoring Nine Years of Formulation Expertise

I've been formulating and manufacturing skincare and artisanal products since 2017. Over nearly a decade, I've invested countless hours into mastering ingredient synergy, safety standards, and precision chemistry.

When you request a custom item, you aren't just paying for the raw ingredients in a single container. You are hiring nearly nine years of experience to design a safe, stable, and luxurious recipe completely from scratch. A full-batch requirement ensures that this level of professional time and expertise is viable.

2. The Science of the Scale

In cosmetic and soap manufacturing, recipes aren't made by the single cup or individual bar. Everything is formulated by precise weight ratios to ensure safety, proper curing, and quality control.

When I adjust a recipe or create a brand-new scent profile, I have to calibrate the equipment and scale the ingredients for a standard production run. It takes the exact same amount of cleanup, safety logging, and labor to make a single custom item as it does to make a whole batch.

3. Sourcing and Ingredient Waste

We pride ourselves on using premium, mindfully sourced ingredients. When a custom order requires a specific essential oil, botanical extract, or specialty butter that we don't normally keep in our working inventory, we have to source it specifically for you.

Because we cannot sell leftover custom products to the general public, requiring the full batch ensures that these high-quality raw materials don't sit on our shelves and go to waste.

4. What Does a "Full Batch" Look Like?

Depending on what you want to create—whether it's a specialty soap run, a dedicated batch of creams, or a custom home fragrance blend—the minimum batch size will vary.

When you take home a full batch, you get a beautiful, exclusive collection of your signature product. They make incredible, deeply personal gifts for family, unforgettable wedding or party favors, or simply a private stash of your absolute favorite blend to keep you stocked for the year.
