How to Make Your Handmade Soap Last Longer

How to Make Your Handmade Soap Last Longer

You’ve made the switch to high-quality, artisanal soap—perhaps a bar of our creamy goat milk and tallow soap—and you’ve noticed the difference immediately. Your skin feels hydrated, the lather is rich, and the scent is pure.

However, because handcrafted soap is full of natural, skin-loving glycerin (which is often removed from commercial bars), it behaves differently than a "grocery store" detergent bar. If left in a puddle of water, a natural bar will soften and disappear much faster than it should.

At Straight Arrow Farms, we want you to get every bit of value out of your purchase. Here is how to make your handmade soap last as long as possible.

1. The Golden Rule: High and Dry

Handcrafted soap loves water when you’re using it, but it needs to be bone-dry when you aren’t.

  • The Soap Dish: Use a draining soap dish. Look for designs with slats, holes, or raised "nubs" that allow water to run away from the bar.

  • Avoid Flat Surfaces: Never leave your soap sitting directly on a flat shower ledge or the edge of the sink. It will sit in a pool of water, turn "mushy," and dissolve prematurely.

2. Give it Some Air

Artisanal soap needs to breathe. If your shower is a small, enclosed space that stays humid for hours after use, your soap won't have a chance to harden back up between showers.

  • Location: Store your soap dish as far away from the showerhead as possible so it isn't getting splashed while not in use.

  • Ventilation: If possible, leave the shower door open or run the bathroom fan to help pull moisture out of the air.

3. Use a Washcloth or Loofah

Many people rub the bar of soap directly onto their skin. While this feels luxurious, it actually uses much more soap than necessary.

  • The Technique: Rub the bar against a washcloth, sponge, or loofah for a few seconds to build up a thick lather, then set the bar aside. The cloth will hold the suds and allow you to wash your entire body using much less of the actual bar.

4. Let it "Cure" Longer

At Straight Arrow Farms, we ensure our soap is fully cured before it reaches you. However, soap is like a fine cheese—it often gets better (and harder) with age.

  • The Pantry Trick: If you buy multiple bars at once, take them out of any airtight packaging and store them in a cool, dry place (like a linen closet) for a few weeks before use. This allows any remaining moisture to evaporate, resulting in an even harder, longer-lasting bar.

5. Rotate Your Bars

If you have a large family using the same shower, a single bar may never get the chance to dry out.

  • The Rotation: Consider having two bars "on the go." By alternating which bar you use each day, you give each one a full 48 hours to dry completely, significantly extending the life of both.

Why the Effort is Worth It

Because our soaps are manufactured in small batches with skin loving oils, grass-fed tallow and rich goat milk, they are packed with fats and vitamins that your skin craves. Taking these small steps to protect your soap ensures that these premium ingredients last for weeks of nourishing cleanses.
